Dorchester Abbey is a Bronze Award Eco Church!
The Eco-Church Team for Dorchester Abbey was set up early in 2025, to focus on what we as a church could, or should be doing together, in order to care for God’s Creation in the bast way we can at a time of growing concern over the Climate emergency.
We decided to apply for Arocha UK’s Bronze Award, and to do this, we have undertaken a detailed survey of the Abbey’s impact on the environment under four headings:
- Teaching and Worship
- Buildings and Energy
- Land and Nature
- Community and Global Engagement.
The Application was helped greatly by some measures we had already taken, such as LED Lighting, and Photovoltaic Panels on the less visible roofs of the building, but there are clearly limitations to what we can do to upgrade the thermal performance of a Grade I Listed medieval Abbey!
Nevertheless we were delighted by be awarded the Bronze award in November 2025!
The PCC have also agreed an Environmental Action plan setting out the optoions we are exploring, with a view to achieving a Silver Award in due course.
The team will continue to meet to progress this work, so watch this space!
