Friends and Preservation Trust of Dorchester Abbey The need for funding for the care of this unique heritage from a broad range of sources is thus a continuous and essential process in which The Friends of Dorchester Abbey and the Preservation Trust have a crucial role. They have similar objectives (conservation, repair and improvements to the Abbey), and were amalgamated as a single registered charity in 1984. The current Chairman of the Preservation Trust (Mrs Anne Kelaart, former High Sheriff of Oxfordshire) is also the Chairman of the Friends committee. The Trustees of the Preservation Trust are responsible for the investments of the Trust and agree the transfer of funds to the Parochial Church Council (PCC), the body responsible for all works in the Abbey. The Trustees are the Rector and Churchwardens (ex officio), an elected Chairman, Hon. Treasurer, Hon. Secretary, one representative of the PCC, four representatives of the Friends, and up to nine nominative trustees (mainly drawn from outside the parish). Trustees meet quarterly. Their policy is to maintain a reserve of at least £100,000 in the Trust funds as cover for emergencies. Membership of the Friends is open to anyone who wishes to contribute to the preservation, restoration or beautification and improvement of the fabric of the Abbey. Two thirds of the members reside outside the parish, and the Abbey is most grateful for the support given by these members. In recent years, through membership subscriptions and fundraising, the Friends have contributed £22,000 to the Preservation Trust for the glass panels of the entrance draught lobby and a new high altar frontal. Members are kept in touch with developments and activities by a twice-yearly Newsletter. Activities include occasional concerts, an annual lecture, and an outing to another abbey or cathedral.
