Dorchester Abbey
    Volunteering

The proper functioning of the Abbey, our worship, our welcome to pilgrims and tourists, and the management of events are completely dependent on an army of volunteers. As the Abbey becomes better known and more used, we need more volunteers than ever to give time towards a wide range of interesting and worthwhile activities:

  • Sidesmen who assist the smooth running of services
  • Stewards to welcome visitors
  • Tour guides for groups of all ages
  • People to lead or help with school groups
  • Bell-ringers
  • People to help in the Tea Room (as cake-makers, tea-pourers, etc)
  • Cleaners and dusters
  • Flower arrangers
  • Helpers to run the museum and shop
  • Stewards for concerts and other events
  • Webmaster and website editor
  • And more

  • And then there are the real behind-the-scenes volunteers:

  • The churchwardens who are responsible for the church building and all that goes on in it
  • Members of the Parochial Church Council, some with specific responsibility for worship, finance, maintenance and refurbishment of the buildings, and marketing and promotions

  • As a member of the Abbey community, whether as committed Christian or interested bystander, in whatever capacity, you would find fellowship and great satisfaction in keeping up the tradition of worship and welcome provided in this great building for nearly 1400 years.
